Abstract

This research examines elements of history, memory and trauma as guiding principles for analyzing the book Os Sertões , by Euclides da The work is divided into t hree parts: the land, the man and the fight. It narrates the War of Canudos, one of the biggest conflicts that occurred in the Brazilian backlands of Bahia between 1986 and 1987. Euclides portrays the suffering of the Canudenses, by testifying and narratin g the events they experienced. In this sequence, we will discuss the trauma and silencing of the victims, who witnessed that fateful episode, from the impact that the Canudos War had on the witnesses, as well as understanding how the author used the testim ony to reconstruct the events that were recorded in the memory of those people. The methodology will be based on bibliographical research and, to support these considerations, t heoretical support of Fabiana de Souza Fredrigo and Ivan Lima Gomes (2020); Pau l Ricoeur (2007); Márcio Seligmann Silva (2003); Maurice Halbwachs (1990); Aleida Assmann (2011); Marianne Hirsch (2012), Walnice Nogueira Galvão (2009), José Carlos de Santana (2001), among others. Therefore, this research, in addition to waging a fight a gainst forgetfulness and silencing, contributes to ensuring that the massacre that occurred in Canudos is not silenced in the writing of history. Thus, by uniting literary and scientific elements through historiographic narrative, Euclides da Cunha promote s a sequence of denunciatory and critical clarifications, contextualizing them to reproduce the genocide that occurred in the village of Canudos.
