Abstract
Multimodality consists of the articulation between verbal and non-verbal signs, which result in
the meaning of the utterance, being a trait that composes all oral and written texts. The grammar
of visual design, on the other hand, provides tools for the study of images, assuming that they
are subject to analysis, as well as verbal language. This approach to reading images resides in
the conception that the image can be read as text, and what is expressed linguistically, through
lexical items and semantic structures, can also be visually expressed. This dissertation presents
the result of the analysis of multimodality in the strips of Katteca, published in the newspaper O
Popular, based on the Grammar of Visual Design (KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, 2006).
Therefore, the study was based on Kress and van Leeuwen (2006), Halliday (1989), Bakhtin
(2011), Marcuschi (2010), Rodrigues (2005), Simões (2021), among other authors that
approach multimodality and the textual genres. The investigation, based on multimodality,
analyzed how word and image are related in the production of meanings in 11 (eleven) strips of
Katteca, published from August to October 2019. As for the approach, this research uses a
qualitative methodology which encompasses a set of strategies to analyze the comics, and as for
the objectives, it is descriptive because it has an exploratory character and proposes to describe
how word and image are related in the production of meanings in these texts. Genres were
approached as social action that present a relatively stable structure. The results of this research
seek to fill existing gaps, especially in relation to reading and understanding multimodal texts.
After analyzing the strips, we showed that words and images are related in an integrated way in
the construction of meanings, in this way, what is not said through words is said through
images. Therefore, the image is not an illustration of the verbal text, nor is the verbal text an
explanation of the image, but they are complementary signs in the production of meanings.
