Abstract
This dissertation analyzes the novel Penelopiad: The Myth of
Penelope and Odisseus , by Margaret Atwood, which was translated into Brazilian Portuguese A
odisseia de Penélope. This novel would be a narrative about the story of Odys seus and
Penelope, told from the point of view of the queen of Ithaca. Thus, this dissertation analyzes
Atwood's novel as a “Penelopeia”, that is, a version of the classical myth told from the point of
view of Penelope, who, in the classical view, was sile nced, since the epic was a narrative genre
predominantly masculine. By giving voice to a historically silenc ed character, Atwood updates
the myth, giving it an alternative vision, which, at several points, dialogues, but differs from the
Greek version, in particular, from the Homeric version. Parody would, in this way, be a
centripetal and centrifugal force, because, at the same time as it brings versions closer together,
it also differentiates them. A second point also stands out: the female authored narra tive. In this
sense, it is possible to identify the main differences present in the epic written by Homer an d
Atwood's narrative that addresses issues regarding the presence of women in fiction and in the
authorship of a story. Thus, the idea of the paro dic intertextuality that the novel has with the
participation of epic poetry will be presented, as well as the idea of the silencing and rise of the
female voice in the literary world based on Margaret Atwood's narrative.
