Abstract

O-Carboxymethyl chitosan is a derivative of chitosan, soluble in a wide range of pH and which has an increasing interest due to its use as a vehicle for insoluble drugs and modulating cell due to their biocompatibility, among other properties. These properties enable future perspectives on the use of this compound, especially in the medical, biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. On the other hand, increased the incidence of infections by Candida albicans and other Candida species, due in part to inherent characteristics of the yeasts themselves such as resistance to fungal and biofilm formation, underscore the need for investigation of compounds that promote decrease or inhibition of biofilm formation capacity. It was found that during the synthesis of O-Carboxymethyl chitosan there was an increase in mass of the compound, and that during the purification there was a significant decrease in the total weight purified. The degree of substitution was 1.73 ± 0.07, the solubility of 86.54 ± 3.99, but also a solubility in a wide pH range – only being insoluble in a range from 2.40 to 3.90. The O-Carboxymethyl chitosan showed no cytotoxicity at concentrations evaluated in this study – [ ]Máx = 50 mg / mL-1 . It was found that the RPMI 1640 culture is the greatest ability to form biofilm of Candida albicans and in other Candida species, which all samples tested biofilms formed in varying degrees and that higher forming the yeast Candida albicans 34, Candida albicans 05 and Candida parapsilosis 38. O-Carboxymethyl chitosan not inhibit biofilm formation of yeasts studied and increased biofilm formation in Candida albicans12031 and Candida albicans 05 plates treated for 24 hours.
