Abstract
This study aims to investigate potential ideological meanings in the construction of identity
narrativization in report genre. The aim is to discuss the role of this genre in legitimizing
different ways of identification of social actors on national political context in weekly news
magazines. The work is mainly situated in the field of Critical Genre Analysis (CGA) - an
interdisciplinary approach that combines discursive aspects to socio-rhetorical factors of the
constitution of genres. The corpus is composed for reports of March 25, 2015 edition of
Brazilian magazine CartaCapital, IstoÉ and Veja and of March 23, 2015 edition of Época
magazine. For the study of this corpus, the research analyzes four rhetorical-discursive
procedures related mainly to the identificational meaning as proposals of Critical Discourse
Analysis (CDA) and Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL). Namely: the representation of
social action (VAN LEEUWEN, 1997), the Appraisal System (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005), a
metaphorical representation (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 2002), and visual structures (KRESS;
VAN LEEUWEN, 2006). The analysis of these procedures contributes to the understanding
of the effects of identification ways on the identity narrativization. The research results show
that negative identifications for certain political leaders and positive identifications for others
are built to specific partisan political positions. Through narrativizations in the report genre,
magazines oppose certain political-ideological currents and line up the other and, therefore,
seek to legitimize their positions and partisan interests.
