Abstract
The Cerrado is the predominant domain of the Midwest region of Brazil. It is observed,
however, that only part of its area preserves the native biodiversity intact. It contains
fruits that can be consumed in natura and/or processed. The fruits are present in human
food since the occupation of this territory. The knowledge of the population regarding
its uses reduces in the face of several factors. Globalization, changing dietary patterns
and availability are examples. As a result, historical, nutritional, cultural and economic
knowledge decreases. The youngest individuals are the most affected by the cultural
loss associated with the fruits. The school and the teachers can and must act in the
rescue associated with the fruitful culture of the biome. Therefore, this dissertation
proposed to carry out a qualitative research that investigated the knowledge of teachers
and students about the culture and tradition of the typical fruits of the Cerrado. All
public schools in the early years of elementary school in the urban area of the county of
Goiás/GO had participants. Semi-structured questionnaires were applied to students and
teachers and interviews were given to teachers to analyze such knowledge. The result of
the analysis confirmed the hypothesis that this wisdom has diminished as new
generations emerge. It is also verified that school institutions demand alternatives to
consolidate this knowledge with their students.
