Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the procedures used in translating Macbeth, drama written by William Shakespeare, into the Japanese movie Kumonosu-jô, by director Akira Kurosawa. To reach this goal an interdisciplinary approach was adopted with theoretical guidelines from: Historical Sociology (IKEGAMI, 1995; 2005) and contemporary Marxist studies (NAJITA, 2005), both by Japanese scholars; American semiotics and intersemiotics translation in its peircean approach (PEIRCE, 2005; PLAZA, 2003; SANTAELLA, 1997; 2002); critical discourse analysis in its Anglo Saxon approach (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001). To reach this aim, scenes from the movie Kumonosu-jô are analyzed under the same interdisciplinary perspective, to elucidate the intersemiotic and discourse relations between the Japanese movie and the drama text Macbeth. From this analysis, comparative considerations are pinpointed regarding the intersemiotic translation procedure, the Japanese culture of honor and the modernizing process of Japan, based on Marxist critical theory and Historical Sociology.
