Abstract
The university as an institution acts on and in the society in which it operates, so that the
sociocultural transformations that have occurred throughout human history reverberate in its
trajectory. Over the course of eight centuries of its existence, the university has undergone
modifications to meet the challenges of each historical period. The clashes and conflicts that
make up his memory emerge from his persistence to preserve their meaning and nature,
essentially alluding to the idea of human formation. Especially in contemporary times, deeply
marked by a technical rationality imposed by the capitalist mode of production and its
ideological framework, it finds itself subjected by this new reason that reaches all instances of
social life. In this context, neoliberal ideas impose economic parameters typical of the market
on the educational system. Education and its institutions must function as a company,
prioritizing profit, efficiency, workforce training and competitiveness. In an attempt to reveal
the consequences of this direction in the area of education, the research The university in the
context of advancing instrumentality: the educational work in question, linked to Research
Line 2, Culture, School and Training, of the master's degree in Education of the Postgraduate
Program in Education at the State University of Goiás (PPGE-UEG/Inhumas), calls into
question the university, training and educational work. The research is anchored in authors
such as Marilena Chaui (1978, 2001, 2003, 2016), Ildeu Moreira Coêlho (1986, 2004, 2011,
2012, 2016) Luis Antônio Cunha (2007), Pierre Dardot; Christian Laval (2016), Werner
Jaeger (2013), Mário Luiz Neves de Azevedo (2021), Hélgio Trindade (2000, 2001), Antônio
Joaquim Severino (2001), among others. From the studies carried out in this work, it is
recognized that education in general has seen itself distanced from its meaning and provoked
to assume instrumentality as the foundation and direction of its existence, which is why the
movement of thought must remember its nature and meaning, in order to resist particular
interferences, since it is configured as a social right that, historicity demonstrates, conquered
through struggles and the awareness that it is a means of transcending the established with a
view to the formation and confirmation of man's humanity.
