Abstract
This study proposes a reflection, based on the poetic perspective of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, around the configurations of the metropolis, owing to the changes occurred in urban space, both geographically and sociologically, between these condhalf of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, dueto the industrialization and urbanization processes, the progress that comes with modernity and the changes in the interpersonal and intrapersonal relations of the modern man.Such transformations include the break between the slow lifepace in the traditional city in which man was accustomed and the big city agitation. Man, dueto the decline of the feudal system, abandons the quiet life of the countryside and goes to the great urban centers in order to find Better job opportunities.As a result, He is forced to live with the accelerated rhythm of the metropolis that expands responding to the technological, industrial, economic and political development, no longer allowing the individual to maintain the narrowing of affectiveties, family coexistence, forcing him to live in the chaos which becomes the great city.In this way, man loses his individuality and becomes a fragmented being.Therefore, we Will analyze the authoress’ poems that approach the theme of the metropolitan space aiming to understand how the modern lyric is related to these transformations and also to understand the poetic perspective of the authores on the city space and the social relations which are governed by bourgeois capitalism to comprehendall thiscomplexity in which urban space has become and the life of modern man with in this context .For this, werely on the following theoretical references:Henri Lefebvre (2001), Walter Benjamim (2ooo – 2009), Julio Pimentel Pinto (1998), Hugo Friedrich (1991), Nicolau Sevcenko 1983), Renato Cordeiro Gomes (1994), Marc Augé (1994), Jean Baudrillard (1991),Carlos Ceia (1996), Eduardo Prado Coelho (1972), António Ramos Rosa (1987),António Manuel dos Santos Cunha (2004), Estela Pinto Ribeiro Lamas (1998), Márcia Barbosa (2001),Luís Ricardo Pereira (2003), Alexandre Bonafim Felizardo (2010-2012), among others.
