Abstract

This work aims at promoting an analysis of two Brazilian novels that are set in the cerrado, such as Herança de sangue: um faroeste brasileiro, by Ivan Sant’Anna and Cidade livre, by João Almino, with a view to understand these texts as westerns of this particular fictional environment. In the first chapter we focus on the evolution of American narratives aimed at the construction of their own identity and then establish the elementary aspects of the American western genre. In the second chapter we analyze the narrative of the book Herança de sangue with focus on the fable and the plot – what is and how it is narrated – to investigate later the similarities between this text and the American western. In the third chapter, we apply the same methodology on the book by João Almino. In addition, we seek to emphasize what distinguishes each of these novels from the western genre, seeking, thus, to understand what Ivan Sant'Anna calls the Brazilian Far-Center-West. In view of these goals, the theoretical reference used part of the field of literary theory , with thinkers such as Todorov (2013), Tomachévsky (1978), Genette (2013), Lima (2002), Candido (1991), and areas of knowledge that contribute and are pertinent to the reflections developed in this work, such as cinema, history, sociology and philosophy, used in this work with theorists as Giddens (1991), Turner (2010), Certeau (2001), Eliade (1992), Oliveira (2012; 2015).
