Abstract

Viticulture in the Brazilian Cerrado has stood out with the use of double pruning for harvesting during the dry winter, but complementary practices such as topping and girdling still lack validation for the Sauvignon Blanc cultivar. This study evaluated the effects of topping, girdling, and their combination on grape quality in Ipameri-GO. The design was completely randomized with four treatments (control, topping, girdling, topping + girdling) and three replications. While there was no significant effect on productivity and soluble solids, the combined treatment (topping + girdling) promoted a significant increase in berry weight, thickness, and length, in addition to reducing must pH without altering titratable acidity. This result indicates favorable modulation of the source-sink balance and higher active acidity, a desirable characteristic for oenological quality. It is concluded that the association between topping and girdling is a promising strategy to improve the qualitative attributes of Sauvignon Blanc grapes in the double pruning system in the Cerrado.
