Abstract
This work aimed to develop filters with activated carbon impregnated with silver and study the formation of biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in them, checking the possible bactericidal activity of silver. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a microorganism present in wastewater of hospital origin. It is a nosocomial pathogen, causing infections difficult to treat, since it is able to develop resistance to many antibiotics. Silver was chosen because it has antimicrobial properties and is used in the treatment of various infectious diseases and has also been used in purification of air and water filters. Samples of activated carbon from coconut shell oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) impregnated with silver (0.0295%, 0.0660%, 0.0845%, 0.1907% and 0.2214% w/w) were prepared which together with the activated carbon without the metal were analyzed for iodine number and morphology by the method of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Filters were developed with coal without silver and silver concentrations prepared which was filtered solution containing the microorganism of interest at a concentration of 2,0x108 CFU / mL and after incubation the colonies were counted and determined by CFU / ml. The impregnated with the highest concentration of impregnated silver (0.2214% w / w) coal has better inhibiting the growth of bacteria presenting 1,9x105 count CFU / ml, and found that the silver had bacteriostatic activity and confirming that it plays a key role in household filters.
