Abstract
This research approaches the aesthetic composition of books of religious brotherhoods and
administrative documents produced in the captaincy of Goias in the eighteenth century, which
have calligraphic ornaments, illuminations and illustrations. The sources selection delimited
three commitments of brotherhoods of Arraial of Cocal, north region of the captaincy, and a
commitment of Vila Boa, administrative seat of the government. From the official
manuscripts, extracted from the Overseas Archive, there are yield maps concerning the period
of the first three General Captains, after the detachment between Goiás and São Paulo. The
theoretical foundation on the aesthetic category is justified by the fact that these writings are
considered as representations of the processes of cultural translation of a project of
civilization orchestrated by the Portuguese Empire to the circumstances of the territory,
Cerrado. This historical-cultural perspective aims at exposing aspects of the Old Regime and
Western writing, of baroque expressions included in the materiality of the texts, and the
sensitivity of the contexts belonging to the colonial society of Goiás. The historiographical
panorama deals with the relations of interethnic conflicts, problems in the implantation of
regal schools, and social and religious practices, for example, the urban organization of the
towns and the Catholic Church. In this research, we applied conceptual instruments related to
Baroque, by Walter Benjamin, on allegory and image-writing, and, by Vilém Flusser, on
authenticity in cultural translations. For the sociological aspect, we applied the concepts of
Gilberto Freyre on orientalism and sadism in the Brazilian formation; of Norbet Elias on self-
control in court societies; and of Sérgio Buarque on ideal types. These authors solidify the
hypothetical structure of research on this society, which prevailed by manifestations of
immediate thought, courage, and fear, to the detriment of abstract thoughts, erudition, and
calligraphy.
