Abstract

This dissertation is linked to the research line of Culture, School, and Formation, of the Graduate Program in Education (PPGE), at the State University of Goiás (UEG), Inhumas Campus. In this investigation, it is considered that to think about the meaning of education is to think about the human condition, reflecting on the conditions of possibility for existence and questioning the conceptions of man and the world, thereby bringing to light the constituent ethical-political implications of the educational phenomenon. Therefore, the objective is to interrogate the meaning of education based on the thought of Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) and its ethical-political aspects, examining them in light of the concepts of politics, freedom, and authority. It is a theoretical study, based on philosophical references that, in addition to Arendt and scholars dedicated to her work, such as Almeida (2009, 2015), Carvalho (2010, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2022), and Correia (2010, 2013), extends the dialogue to other authors, namely, Almeida (2019, 2024), Chauí (2014, 2016, 2021a, 2021b), Coêlho (2012a, 2012b, 2012c, 2016), Fernandes (2010, 2012, 2016, 2020), Nussbaum (2015), and others. It seeks to demonstrate education as a commitment and responsibility for the world, as an essential ethical-political act for its continuity, the permanence of the political space, and the constitution of autonomy. It is understood that defending education as human formation means resisting the imperatives of conformity inherent in the principles of the instrumentalization of existence and education, and consequently of the school, such as (re)production, consumption, utility, and the obtainment of results. It is understood that the cultivation of thought is paramount to the constitution of autonomy, which enables humans to recognize and assume their place in the world, becoming responsible for their choices, which may or may not contribute to the permanence and durability of the common world, where freedom arises among men and guarantees the dignity of politics.
