Abstract
This dissertation has the general objective of analyzing the audiovisualities in Carrie, by Brian
De Palma (1976), so that we can understand how horror cinema materializes as a place of
discursive production in the constitution of the female body in the domestic and school
discursive domain. The specific objectives are: i) to develop an analytical description of the
female body in the film Carrie (1976) from its inscription in the domestic and school discursive
domain; ii) outline how the family relationship built between the teenager and her mother
corroborates a Christian discursive construction that builds bodily practices on how women
should behave, dress and relate; iii) and, finally, demonstrate how the school discursive domain
is thought of as a space that allows the action of disciplinary power and also about how this
space provokes an exclusion of those subjects who do not inscribe themselves in a discursive
order that establishes it as “normal” before the other subjects, causing bullying practices to
materialize in their interiority. This research is part of the Discourse Analysis methodology
based on the postulates of Foucault (1978, 1995, 2001, 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2016) and
Milanez (2011, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022). In view of this, we will respond to the
questioning of how the film Carrie (1976), as well as other horror films, benefited from the
emergency conditions of its time so that its audiovisual materialization was possible. For this,
we start from the hypothesis that the film Carrie builds corporal practices for women in the
school and domestic space based on knowledge-power relations that determine what they can
and should say. So, based on the analyses, I verify that the regularities presented in the beat
(MILANEZ and OLIVEIRA, 2019) of the images correspond to the expected result by the
objectives proposed by the research, thus, it appears that the audiovisual Carrie (1976), directed
by Brian De Palma materializes a female body constitution through the domestic and school
discursive domains during the plot.
