Abstract

The present report is a research and analysis of the work: Biografia de Mahommah Gardo Baquaaqua: um nativo de Zoogoo, no interior da África, the history of a young African who was captured and enslaved, being taken by force to the American continent in the middle of the XIX century, passing by Brazil, The United States, Haiti, Canada and finally England. The study is based on a bibliographical analysis, situated in the Language Studies field, more specifically in the Discourse Studies regarding critical outlook. For the accomplishment of this research, Bakhtinian concepts about dialogism, polyphony and voices have been deployed, whereby a parallel between the present discourses in the work devised in the XIX century context with the current discourses in present time. Thus, we have identified that those slavery discourses which were spread in the society of that time for more than three centuries, have still been widespread through different ways in our present-day society. The work’s analysis from Bakhtinian concepts raised echoes from the past that still persevere in reverberating nowadays. Nevertheless, above all that, we have identified in the narrative a great resistance from Baquaqua’s side, who maneuvered strategies for his own survival, in the period of his slavery. As a result, our investigation supports the evidence that the Brazilian black population, descendant of a people who have been enslaved for more than three centuries, as well as the work’s protagonist, have sought to show themselves as resilient, holding up in a daily struggle for their rights in a society that still carry out slavery traits.
