A índia Sabina e a visitação inquisitorial do Grão-Pará: rituais indígenas de cura e adivinhação em Belém colonial (1763-1769)

Abstract

This dissertation analyzes the presence of indigenous healers and diviners during the last Inquisitorial Visitation to Portuguese America, which took place between 1763-1769 in Grão-Pará. In this scenario, our focus falls on the Indian woman Sabina, born around 1715 in the backlands of Belém (or the villages of Cintra and Colares), who is considered the greatest healer in Pará in the mid-18th century – having been denounced three times after the installation of the Court in Belém. In this sense, the dissertation aims to analyze the healing-divination practices carried out by Sabina. To this end, we seek to carry out a historical-anthropological reading of the rituals recorded in the historical documents of their inquisitorial denunciations, seeking to revisit their religious practices based on the parameters of their own native cosmologies.
