Abstract

We carry out a scientometric analysis of studies on the interaction of micropollutants in aquatic ecosystems. In the Web of Science database, articles with the words (agrotoxic * or pesticid *) and (microalgae or phytoplankton or perifyton) published between 1998 and 2018 were selected. From 322 selected articles, 309 were analyzed. These referred mainly to the effects of the pesticides atrazine, diuron and chlorpyrifos on these organisms. These bioaccumulate in beings, are carcinogenic to humans, and interfere with the central nervous system, respectively. The algae species most cited in the studies were: Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus quadricauda, Raphidocelis subcapitata. Although the search was focused on algae, Daphnia magna, a species of zooplankton, witch is the most studied. Most of the articles surveyed were experimental research carried out in a freshwater ecosystem. The United States and China have the largest number of publications. There have been fluctuations in the number of articles published over the years. Ecotoxicology, Aquatic Toxicology and Science of the Total Environment were the journals that published the most studies. Environmental Sciences and Ecology, Marine and Freshwater Biology, and Toxicology the areas of research concentrated most publications. From 309 articles analyzed, 18 were not cited, while seven together had 1134 citations. This synthesis can support new studies performing on ecotoxicology with microorganisms directing the choice of model organisms, based on the sensitivity indication in several species to micropollutants. The importance of organism groups should be given as indicators of aquatic health ecosystems.
