Abstract

Chickpeas are the second most consumed legume in the world and are important for feeding underserved populations due to their protein content. In Brazil, their production is incipient, requiring the import of a large portion of the grain consumed. Sitophilus oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a worldwide pest of stored cereal grains, but it has the potential to cause damage and losses to stored chickpeas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance of chickpea genotypes to Sitophilus oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae. The experiments were conducted in the laboratory and used the following genotypes: Desi 1605, Desi 10209, Desi 10108, Desi 1606, Desi 10159, BRS Toro, BRS Aleppo, BRS Kalifa, BRS Cícero, and BRS Cristalino, from the Vegetable and Legume Breeding Program of Embrapa Hortaliças. The resistance of the chickpea genotypes was evaluated at 30, 60, 90, and 120 days after pest infestation, determining the following parameters: number of live and dead insects, consumption, and percentage of grains damaged by the pest in each genotype. The genotype Desi 10209 showed resistance to Sitophillus oryzae . Sitophillus oryzae has the potential to cause significant damage to stored chickpea grains. The chickpea cultivar BRS Cícero showed susceptibility and the other cultivars moderate resistance to Sitophilus oryzae.
