Abstract
The theme, Córrego Chapéu de Padre in the City of Goiás: Landscape Scenarios and Water
Heritage, proposes a more detailed examination of this watercourse, located in the central eastern
portion of the City of Goiás (GO). It is a tributa ry of the Rio Vermelho, which is part of the
Araguaia River basin in the Central West region of Brazil. As the epicenter of a microcosm
embedded in situ within the Goiás Cerrado, with its small valley landscape, this geosite is named
after its upstream cou nterpart, Morro Chapéu de Padre, and has a single seasonal tributary known
as Córrego das Águas Férreas. This study aims to investigate and publicize the natural history and
human interventions in this waterbody, as well as to understand what remains of th e community’s
relationship with it. This initiative brings to light the inevitable and challenging issue of seeking
the best approach to properly valuing the heritage of what remains of the geodiverse, natural, and
anthropic landscape of the stream and its surroundings. To better assess the significance of the
remaining geo historical heritage and its identity related contribution to the urban landscape of
Cidade de Goiás, a qualitative analysis is conducted. This approach examines scientific and
educationa l perspectives that define its importance. The study draws on journalistic records, local
literary works, public decrees, reports, historical maps, and photographic iconography from
different periods, which together illustrate the transformations of Córreg o Chapéu de Padre. These
sources provide insights into the environmental, cultural, economic, and public utility aspects of
the stream, as well as its contemporary significance. The expected outcome is to raise collective
awareness of the urgent need to re scue and conserve environmental and cultural memory. This
initiative seeks the engagement of various local stakeholders in a restorative and meaningful effort
to preserve this water related geosite. Beyond its aesthetic, educational, and informational valu e,
the stream plays a crucial role as a pure and vital source of drinking water. Its conservation is
essential to the historical and cultural legacy of Goiás, as it has been a fundamental element in
the establishment and permanence of civilization in this first Capital of the Cerrado, standing as
a unique exponent of the region’s geodiversity.
