Abstract

This essay aims to describe the constructions with the verbs "pegar" and "tomar" inCoraCarolina's works to investigate under the Construction Grammar's perspectivetheirmultifunctionality, correlating their uses in full constructions and support constructions. Byadopting this theoretical perspective, it is necessary to consider the linguistic levels of formandmeaning involved in the elaboration of constructions with these verbs, and it is also necessarytoconsider the cognitive processes that enable their change from the full category to the support category, especially the metaphorization process. Many of the activities of human beings start from a corporeal experience and, based on it, even unconsciously, they build metaphors and, bearing in mind that the corporeal experience is also the basis for conceptualizing our linguisticexpedients, that's why we chose to investigate the verbs "pegar" and "tomar", since bothhaveastheir basic semantic feature the approximation to the body and both represent basic actions: grab something or someone; holding and claiming possession of something. Due tothesecharacteristics, these verbs are frequent in everyday speech and, thus, they are easily accessed. Furthermore, motivated by the frequency of use, these verbs tend, from a metaphorical process, to adhere to cultural peculiarities of the user's context of use. In this condition, the initial hypothesis for the development of this work lies in the fact that language has a bodilybasisforthe construction of metaphors (LAKOFF, 1987; LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 2002; SILVA, 2005), just as the verbs "pegar" and "tomar" have a strong relationship with the body, this relationshipcan serve as a basis for abstracting these verbs and expanding their contexts of use and, thus, their constructional networks. Hence, the focus of this research is to describe howthemetaphorical process is revealed in the support-constructions, which in turn, are frequent inGoiás's speech (SILVA, 2016; OLIVEIRA, 2018). Considering the intrinsic relationshipoflanguage and culture, we used the works of Cora Coralina (2013a, 2013b, 2013c) as a researchcorpus. The poetess' texts have a mnemonic character and, thus, they manage to represent thelinguistic profile of Goiás culture by recording the customs of the people of Goiás. Asamethodological path, we use qualitative research with a quantitative support. The researchwasbased on Usage Based Linguistics of Bybee (2010, 2016), Furtado da Cunha et. al. (2013), Givón (2001) and Neves (2002, 2018) which allowed us to analyze the cognitive aspects that guide the different uses of the constructions with the verbs under study. Also, intheConstruction Grammar by Goldberg (2006), Traugott and Trousdale (2013), Traugott (2008), Croft (2001), Langacker (1987) and others, which allowed the study of language as anabstract cognitive scheme, organized in hierarchical and inheritance networks. So far, data analysisdemonstrates that the multifunctionality of the verbs "pegar" and "tomar" can be linkedtothecommon trait of the full and support categories: that of body approximation (OLIVEIRA, 2018), also occurs due to the dynamism of language, which aims to meet the needs of thespeaker.
