Ouro na mina, pobreza no município : mineração e economia de perdas em Crixás (GO)

Abstract

A This dissertation examines, through a combination of literature review and the collection of qualitative and quantitative data and information, the human, economic, and environmental costs of gold mining conducted by the multinational company AngloGold Ashanti in the municipality of Crixás (GO). The first section aims to demonstrate the historical economic dependency of the region on mineral activity. Additionally, it presents the socioeconomic profile of the municipality and the territorial distribution of the large mining operation within the city. In the second part, the discussion focuses on the contradictions between development a nd mining activity, aiming to show that the mining operations in Crixás are predatory, especially when considering compulsory displacements, the environmental suffering of the community, water, soil, and air contamination, and, most importantly, the depend ency on mining. Finally, the third section is dedicated to presenting the concept of mining dependency, outlining the factors that contribute to this dependency in the municipality, such as economic asphyxiation, capital flight, and corporate control over the territory. In this way, the real impact of mining dependency on the municipality becomes evident when weighing the wealth generated against the populations living in vulnerable conditions in the region, confirming the hypothesis of the mine's wealth an d, consequently, the poverty of the municipality. It is important to note that this research utilizes methodological procedures based on bibliographic surveys, field research, field diaries, and interviews. The collection of quantitative data includes rese arch from sources such as IBGE, ANM, CECAD, and IMB. The qualitative and quantitative data were systematized into graphs, charts, tables, maps, and image cards.
