Abstract
Movies represent a rich source of cultural and linguistic research, reflecting not only
important aspects of native speakers' culture but also nuances of everyday oral language. In
this sense, this study explores subtitles of English-language films with the overall goal of
identifying lexical bundles, sequences of words, containing the pronoun "you". Our specific
objective is to propose a didactic sequence for English teaching and to analyze the
Curricular Document for Goiás (GOIÁS, 2019) regarding the treatment of oral proficiency.
The present research will be conducted under the guidance of Corpus Linguistics: Berber
Sardinha (2004; 2012, 2023), Biber (2009), Cortez (2015), Gray and Egbbert (2019), Levshina (2017), among others. From a specialized repository of movie subtitles, we compiled a
corpus composed of 10,044 films, with approximately 91,000,000 words. The linguisticcomputational
processing was carried out by the WordSmith Tools, version 8 (SCOTT, 2021).
The results obtained indicate a high frequency of the following lexical bundles: "what are
you doing", "what do you mean", "what do you think", "what do you want", and "do you
want to", that is, recurring patterns of the use of the pronoun "you" in diverse contexts,
providing an insight into the language used by native speakers. Our work can serve as a
reference for an oral record, often neglected by traditional teaching methods and
textbooks.
