Abstract
Jongo, which is an umbigada dance originating from enslaved people in Brazil of Bantu origin,
gradually adapts and reconfigures itself in different contexts. In southeastern Brazil, especially
in the Paraíba Valley, it was practiced within several quilombos or black communities.
Currently, their memory is perpetuated by groups that play an active role in these cultural
expressions, being groups of tradition or the study of black ancestral reminiscences. In Goiás,
Jongo spread through processes of cultural meetings, with emphasis on groups such as Jongo
Iracema (Anápolis), Malungos de Angola (Cidade de Goiás), and N'goma (Catalão), in addition
to Coletivo 22 (Goiânia) . These groups reinterpret Jongo in new contexts, contributing to the
state's cultural diversity. This dissertation aims to analyze the experiences and forms of
categorization of identity representations of Jongo groups in Goiás. The methodology includes
data collection, interviews and observations of Jongo groups in Goiás, structured in three
chapters that address contextualization, Jongo's trajectory and of its practitioners, and
conceptions of representation and identity. The investigation focuses on the reconfiguration of
the territorialities of non-traditional groups, influenced by diasporic processes and the
hybridization of cultures over the years. Furthermore, it is pointed out that Jongo in Goiás is an
example of cultural resistance, as the groups studied demonstrate that, in addition to being a
significant cultural practice, it is a means of strengthening solidarity networks and Afro-
Brazilian identities. The analysis of these experiences will contribute to the unveiling of black
cultures in Goiás and Brazil, filling gaps in research on this cultural manifestation
