Fotobiomodulação na consolidação de fraturas ósseas

Abstract

Resulting from a master’s thesis, the present study investigates the interactions between light and biological tissues aimed at the treatment of bone fractures. It discusses bone physiology, the importance of more efficient techniques for treating fractures, and the potential of photobiomodulation (PBM) for bone regeneration. The results of this research were based on a systematic literature review following the Cochrane protocol, with its research plan previously registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) (CRD42024554046), to verify the efficacy of PBM in human bone regeneration compared to placebo and conventional treatments. Five clinical trial articles were included in this review; their results showed no significant differences in accelerating bone callus formation or reducing the fracture line. However, they demonstrated benefits such as pain and edema reduction, as well as a lower intake of medication during the treatment period. Furthermore, the studies included in this review lacked standardization in assessment methods, dosage, and treatment duration, preventing precise conclusions. Nevertheless, studies already exist demonstrating the cost-benefit of photobiomodulation in regenerative treatments, which justifies the continuation of research in this field. To this end, further studies with standardized approaches, longer durations, larger samples, and regular radiographic monitoring are necessary to establish precise guidelines for applying photobiomodulation for bone fracture regeneration.
