Abstract

The present study aims to conduct a diagnosis of the photographic, filmic, and field diary collection of photographer and filmmaker Jesco von Puttkamer, analyze the preservation policy applied to the collection, and create a corresponding catalog. It is necessary to discuss identity, culture, memory, cultural heritage, law, and archival science to gain a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of managing this collection. The collection should be perceived not only as a place of memory preservation but also as a site of power exercise. It is crucial to grasp that the collection is part of cultural heritage and, as such, should be treated in accordance with preservation regulations and legislation in force. The research adopts a descriptive- exploratory approach, with emphasis on bibliographic research and analysis of internal documents from IGPA/PUC-GO, as well as writings from archivists, historians, jurists, sociologists, and legal texts. The findings indicate that the preservation policy and techniques implemented by IGPA in managing the collection align with modern practices and policies for preserving archival collections. As a result, a catalog containing all 303 field diaries, representing a valuable cultural asset, was produced. In conclusion, the significance of Professor Jesco von Puttkamer's collection for collective history and memory is underscored, solidifying its status as part of Brazil's national cultural heritage.
