Abstract

This research has as its theme the cultural artefact named as ox cart [carro de boi], highlighting it as an artistic asset that became the protagonist of various historical, economic, political, social, cultural and religious contexts. It is intended to analyze the process of safeguarding the ox cart pilgrimage in Trindade from the perspective of the demands made between the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan), Secretaria de Cultura do Estado de Goiás and the holders, “carreiros” and “carapinas”. It is placing the manufacture of ox carts as a source of artistic expression, visibility and representativeness of cultural manifestations in Goiás. The specific objectives were outlined considering the conduct of a bibliographical research and, of course, the oral interview. These are our objetives. A) list in a more critical way the possible reasons that led to the mobilization around the actions to safeguard the ox cart pilgrimage according to the specific historical and sociocultural context of today; B) analyze the ways in which the discourse on heritage also mobilizes strategies for identity, construction and belonging; C) identify the artistic and secular engineering in the manufacture of the ox cart made by the carapina; D) Recognize the knowledge applied in the craft of carrying and breaking oxen. The methodology includes a theoretical-conceptual bibliographic review, historiographic and iconographic analysis of the ox cart and its specificities in the center-west of Goiás, interviews and data collection via questionnaires with main protagonists: carapina/carreiro. As a result, the resignification of the career path in the face of modernity, the need for valorization and the visibility of the career path by official bodies and the career community was perceived, as they are the craftsmen responsible for manufacturing the bullock cart that is the protagonist and symbol of the Trindade Pilgrimage and the annual parades in the territory of Goiás. The research resulted in the production of an e-book highlighting the process of building the ox cart and the life story of the craftsmen who master this know-how.
