Abstract
Ethnozoology is a branch of ethnobiology that addresses the existing relationships
between animals and humans, providing subsidies for sustainable management to
assess and interpret the impacts attributed to human activities on other animal species,
and their relationship with biodiversity. In this study we investigate the importance of
ethnozoology for the conservation of biodiversity, in two chapters. In the first, we
investigated the trends and gaps in scientific publications on etnozoology, using the
word “Ethnozoology”, in the Web of Science database to search for scientific papers.
We found 177 publications, as a significant increase in the last 10 years (R = 0.76),
mainly in Brazil. Conservation, animals, knowledge, medicines, fishing communities
and folk medicine were the most frequent words in publications. We conclude that
ethno-zoological studies remain concentrated on a temporal (last 10 years), spatial
(Brazil, northeastern region), and cultural scale (many of the studies involve the use of
animals as fishing resources and traditional folk medicine). In the second chapter, we
investigate the ethno-zoological practices adopted by the population of the São
Domingo settlement, for the conservation of mammals in southern Goiás, with active
searches for mammal species and interviews with local residents, highlighting the
relationships between socio-economic factors and the use of hunting, to learn about
the relationship between the settlement community and the environment, highlighting
ethnozoology in the conservation of mastofauna. We emphasize that the perception of
mammals in a rural environment is associated with the time spent in years in the place
and also the financial income of residents
