Abstract
Microorganisms are an important source of bioactive compounds with high economic value
and many advantages concerning their use and production. The objective of this study was to
isolate fungi from Cerrado soil and identify those with a promising source of natural bioactive
compounds, precisely because they have such a structural diversity. This, together with the
wide range of microorganisms we can find in nature, particularly those that have not been
exploited, allows us to manipulate the metabolic pathways of culture of the fungi. To begin
with, fungi from the Cerrado soil in the state of Goiás were isolated and selected considering
their potential production of secondary metabolites with biological activity. The selection of
11 isolated fungi happened previously due to the results of toxicity to Artemia salina and
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography. Two species of fungi had had promising
previous results compared to the other ones. These fungi were identified from the extraction
of their DNA and amplification of their 18S rRNA gene, which featured Aspergillus flavus
and Paecilomyces variotii . The compounds were extracted from these fungi, followed by an
evaluation of the biological potential of the compounds produced by fungi A. flavus and P.
variotii through the level of toxicity to Artemia salina, antimicrobial susceptibility testing by
disk diffusion and dilution and the minimum inhibitory concentration and cytotoxic
evaluation by the MTT method. Chemical analyses of the compounds were done through
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and High-Performance Liquid
Chromatography combined to Mass Spectrometry (HPLC - MS / MS) in order to elucidate the
compounds. Through this study, it was possible to check the potential of the Cerrado soil in
Goiás when it comes to providing fungi, as well as the use of compounds produced by A.
flavus and P. variotii with industrial interest.
