Abstract

This paper is an analysis of the picture "O tronco" (1999), directed by João Batista de Andrade, an adaptation of the Bernardo Élis' homonym novel, published in 1956. The plot presents an inlander war between State soldiers and landowners' hired guns, which took place in northern Goiás in the early 20th century. Over the interconnection between history, literature and cinema, this analysis starts in the literary piece, goes throughout the historiography concerning the Duro slaughter and, in the film adaptation, the highlight is on how the film-maker represents violence, the landowners' domain and the goiana culture in the movie, eliciting a western-ish production inspired in the hollywoodian classic westerns.
