Abstract

This work is a description of qualitative research conducted with a group of nonindigenous students and teachers from Amapá, Brazil, in order to investigate the degree of knowledge about the culture and the Wajãpi indigenous graphics. The research was structured on investigative approach about the culture and graphics on ethnicity, its importance since the creation, maintenance and preservation in the villages, as well as their interaction with the local society. For this, the research sought theoretical basis in Braggio (1998), Chagas (2011), Gallois (2002), Grupioni (2009), Vidal (2007), among others, with different theoretical positions on the theme. We sought to further understand the relationship between the indigenous and non- indigenous from Amapá. Thus, a questionnaire was administered to participants between April and August 2015 in two state schools in the municipalities of Santana and Pedra Branca do Amapari. The present dissertation deals with the culture and Kusiwa graphics published in books produced by Wajãpi indigenous teachers, which contains a wealth of data on the origin and culture of these people. However, the nonindigenous from Amapa, especially students and teachers, do not have access to this material. These developments have been investigated in an interdisciplinary way using the theoretical framework of cultural studies that supporting the relationship of Wajãpi indigenous culture with the society. This work is divided into four parts, as follows: Introduction, in which it makes an approach about the research, its relevance and objectives; I. Brief History of Indigenous from Brazil, and in particular Wajãpi people from Amapá, emphasizing the cultural and graphics aspects ascommunication way; II. Methodological procedures that present the paths for research and interpretation of the data collected; III. Descriptive interpretation of the data which describes the issues that supported the questionnaires and drawn answers, and it do the interpretation of the data, aligning them, where possible, with the theories used in this research. The text is complemented with final considerations of the study, in which we point out some interpretations of the data collected, followed by theoretical references used in the research. In addition, we present an appendix corresponding to the questionnaire copy applied to the nonindigenous and an annex relating to the Consent Form, completed and signed by the research participants.
