Abstract

The research analyzes the film elephant, which deals with the massacre committed on a Monday morning, April 19, 1999, inside a high school in the State of Colorado, USA. Filmed in 2003, this film was inspired by the event to present a portrait of the American youth in accordance with the complexity of social relations in the context of capitalist society. The film reflects the ephemeral relationship between individuals in modern society to portray an educational institution marked by authoritarian power that marks the daily lives of students. Geared to meet the market world, young people today are compulsorily exposed to situations involving discipline, competition, individualism, violence etc. Starting from this assumption, our study found that the movie Elephant constitutes as an expression of the values of the capitalist society. It was crucial the contribution of some authors, such as: Walter Benjamin, Marc Ferro, Guy Debord, Nildo Viana, Maurício Tragtenberg and others.
