"Um remédio para a alma" o risível em Goiás no jornal Santuário da Trindade(1922-1931)

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the humor expressed in the journal Santuario da Trindade, founded and directed by bavarian missionaries of the Congregação do Santíssimo Redentor – redemptorists. The newspaper, in circulation from 1922 to 1931, conveyed regional materials, national and international, religious and secular, often with a conservative bias, moralizing and evangelizing, in line with the particular and delicate context of the time, which protestantism, masonry, spiritualism and atheism threatened the "true religion" in Goiás and Brazil. With regard to this research, the paper's uniqueness was the "anecdotes" section, which were published jokes with characters and different situations. The constant presence of a section of humor in a Catholic newspaper of the early twentieth century in Goiás created the following question: what is the purpose of the inclusion of these jokes, considering that humor is strongly associated with not-serious and unsuitable, generally undervalued (or repudiated) from the religious point of view? Drawing on authors as Bakhtin (1999), Bergson (1983) and Freud (1905), it believes in spreading humor as a discursive strategy aimed at both attracting readership through a recreational space and brain relaxation , as invigorate the content of serious matters, in a comically and unpretentious way, since many jokes also brought the same moralizing messages from the usual content of the newspaper. In short, the inclusion of humor in Santuario de Trindade may have served as an outlet able to offer moments of lightness and relaxation, and also in other cases, strengthen the ideals of the Catholic Church through the scoff of certain unwanted habits.
