Abstract

In agricultural systems, the use of brassinosteroids is presented as a tool to enhance the productivity of agricultural crops by optimizing agronomic characters. Sorghum, being an important crop for the production system, requires management strategies to increase the productive potential and promote greater climatic and operational adaptability of the crop in the production system. Thus, the present work aimed to identify the effect of the brassinosteroid plant regulator on the agronomic performance of sorghum plants. To test the hypothesis that brassinosteroids enhance the development and agronomic characteristics of sorghum plants, a work was carried out in the off-season, in the municipality of Ipameri, Goiás. The experiment was conducted in 2019, using a delineation in randomized blocks, with six treatments (doses of brassinosteroids) and five repetitions. To evaluate the effect of the application of brassinosteroids, morphological variables were analyzed (plant height, stem diameter, root length, number of leaves, stem mass ratio, leaf mass ratio, root mass ratio, total dry biomass, and content relative water content) and yield components of sorghum culture (panicle length, mass of 100 grains and grain yield). The brassinosteroid negatively affected the stem diameter, the leaf mass ratio, and the number of leaves. However, a maximum increase in grain yield was observed when the sorghum plants were submitted to a dose of 0.088 mL L-1 of the brassinosteroide. The exogenous application of brassinosteroids attenuates the deleterious effects of abiotic stresses, without major negative impacts on the agronomic components of the sorghum plant and, consequently, generates greater productivity.
