Abstract
The Municipal School Atlas is not just a collection of ready
made maps, but a systematic
organization of data, information and cartographic and other graphic representations (tabular and
graphical) to provide teaching and learning about the local space. In this sense, this work aims to
demonstrate the pedagogical potential of the Municipal School Atlas in the study of the local
space, where students live and their daily lives. The methodological procedures consisted of a
constant bibliographical review and documentary consultation, specifically in relation to the
National Common Curriculum Base to verify the pedagog ical possibilities for the Municipal
School Atlas. Based on the literature review, the Atlas is understood from a pedagogical
perspective, since in addition to its descriptive nature, the material also involves suggestions and
didactic proposals for teache rs. Given the benefits and potential of the pedagogical use of
Municipal School Atlases in teaching and learning Geography, the material shows great potential
for covering the historical, demographic, economic, environmental and cultural characteristics of
the municipality, which is often not covered in textbooks. As such, the Atlas is an opportune piece
of teaching material to be used from the early years of elementary school onwards with a view to
cartographic literacy, helping students, under teacher med iation, to be able to reason
geographically in an aspect based way.
