Abstract

This research is part of the Culture, School, and Training research line of the Graduate Program in Education – PPGE, at the State University of Goiás, Inhumas University Unit. The present research aims to reflect on education, politics, society, and their relationships, based on the reading of the texts "Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men," "The Social Contract," and "Emile, or On Education" by Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778). In this study, we conducted bibliographic research of a philosophical nature, which allowed us to understand the discussions and basic concepts that Rousseau demonstrates in his writings. We sought to understand the educational act, assuming it as a human practice, as well as to demonstrate, based on Rousseau's writings, his pedagogy founded on autonomy and approximation of human nature. Thus, education has resulted in meeting the practical demands of society through technique and transmission of information. Therefore, educational priority turns more towards statistical production of numbers, leaving political issues silenced. Human, political, and ethical aspects are little considered, reducing educational practice to social reproduction. Therefore, thinking about a fair and democratic education is a difficult task given the priorities set by society. We advocate for an education that is a possibility for human expression and autonomy, through reflection on reality based on the propositions set forth in Rousseau's writings, which would be a formation contrary to institutionalized education.
