Abstract

Joaquim José da Veiga Valle (1806-1874) is considered the main baroque artist in Goiás, because of his sacred sculptures. However, from the period from his death in 1874 to the 1940s, when the transfer of the capital city of Goiás to Goiânia took place, there were practically no references to its artistic qualities. The hypothesis is that the vilaboense elite, resentful of the loss of the capital, began to seek its roots in order to place the city as the cradle of the goiana culture. It is precisely in this context that Veiga Valle's life and work are revalued with the exhibition organized by José Rescala. From then on Veiga Valle's works are exhibited at other times and at the height of an exhibition at MASP in the year 1976. Throughout this period, a work of construction and dissemination of the works of Veiga Valle was intense, with OVAT as the main promoter of the publicity events and Heliana Angotti-Salgueiro as the main scholar of his works. Therefore, the theme of this dissertation is the analysis of the factors that made Veiga Valle, a silenced artist, become the symbol of the baroque goiano.
