Abstract

This study investigates the pilgrimage of the carreiros (ox cart drivers) in Trindade, Goiás—a century-old movement that has persisted despite the advent of modernity marked by motor vehicles and busy highways. The devotion to the Divine Eternal Father began in the old settlement of Barro Preto with the discovery of the medallion of the Holy Trinity, found by the farming couple Constantino Xavier and Ana Rosa around 1840. In light of hermeneutic anthropology, the motivations that lead the carreiros to Trindade were analyzed as a practice imbued with meaning for these groups. We also turned to ethnoscenology to understand the symbolism present in the ox cart parade, and to retrotopia, which offers carreiros and participants an anchor in time, reaffirming identities and values in a movement of resistance over the years. Data collection was carried out through participant observation, field diary notes, and collected images. This work concluded that faith and tradition are the main driving forces that lead the carreiros to continue participating in the pilgrimage annually.
