Abstract
Intercultural interaction requires knowledge of
sociopragmatic aspects, which are outside the structural field of language. In teaching
English, it is necessary to expose and practice common cultural elements recognized by
native speakers. In the light of discussions involving lexicon and culture, we resort to the
theoretical-methodological foundation of Lexicology (BIDERMAN, 1998a, 1998b),
Interculturality (KRAMSH, 2013; SILVA, 2018) and Corpus Linguistics (BERBER
SARDINHA, 2004, 2012). In this context, the present research aims to discuss the Shared
Cultural Load present in the lexicon of the English language, more precisely in the North
American variety. The specific objectives are the following: 1) to create a list, based on the
Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary (CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, 2008),
containing culturally marked words in the North American variety of English; 2) highlight
the relationship between linguistic sociopragmatism and sociocultural competences and 3) present a didactic sequence that addresses the words with high Shared Cultural Load selected
from the list. Regarding the research materials, we used the Cambridge Advanced Learner's
Dictionary, Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and the ‘Documento
Curricular para Goiás’ (GOIÁS, 2019). The methodological procedures involved reading the
Curriculum Document, searching the words in COCA, selecting the words and, finally, the
phase related to the elaboration of the didactic sequence. We hope to contribute to a teaching
aimed also at elements with potential for enrichment in the linguistic, social and cultural
spheres.
