Culltura, memória e estética no cemitério Santa em Goiânia(1940-2018)

Abstract

The present research carried out a study about the Santana Cemetery located in the city of Goiânia-GO. Inaugurated in 1940, and listed as historical and cultural heritage, the necropolis shows in its material and symbolic structure a set of elements based on the forms and images that give feeling to the social relations established in the young capital since its genesis, thus, idiosyncratic and revealing aspects of Goianian society, while not losing sight of the historical and political context through which the newly built city passed. Thus, this dissertation will be guided by the following question: What is the meaning of the Santana cemetery for the historical and cultural memory of the city of Goiânia, in view of its official purpose of being a modern and patrimonial cemetery? The hypothesis is that the Santana cemetery is a locus of multiple representations and practices that give it a complexity from the religious, aesthetic and memorial point of view that subverts the official representations. It is thus a secularized cemetery permeated by multiple religious representations, a modernist aesthetic artefact permeated by traditional artistic representations, a place of patrimonialized memory that privileges mainly the traditional elite of the city. We emphasize that the value of the cemetery is in this possibility of referring to a multiplicity of meanings. The dissertation was divided into three chapters, namely: The emergence of the Santana Cemetery in a city that dreamed of modernity; The perverse patrimonialization of the Santana Cemetery in a city of exhausted modernity; The Santana Cemetery as the locus of a plural aesthetic.
