Abstract
The intent of this research is to understand how the teachings related to environmental
education is being offered in public schools and if it contributes to the change of behavior
regarding of the conservation of the cerrado of Goiás. In addition, it aimed to observe if the
teaching and actions of the school units in the study are aligned with the legislation, to
describe if there is effectiveness on preserving the cerrado of Goiás and to confirm if the
public institution has fulfilled its role in the provision of contents/objects of knowledge
about environmental education. Therefore, three public high schools in the city of Anápolis
were researched: State Military Police College of Goiás Doutor César Toledo, Centro de
Educação em Período Integral Doctor Genserico Gonzaga Jaime and Multipurpose State
College Frei João Batista Qualitative research procedures were used with the collection of
bibliographic data through the analysis of primary documents, such as laws, decrees,
resolutions and ordinances, and also a documental analysis of the three school units. The
philosopher, sociologist, and education scholar Pierre Bourdieu (2015) was studied for the
theoretical foundation; the studies of David Harvey (2016) and Jean François (2011) were
used for understanding the modern condition; and the works of Laval (2020) for the
understanding of neoliberalism. At last, it was concluded that schools offer environmental
education, however they do not work interdisciplinary, despite laws and regulations defined
they should approach this content as interdisciplinary, and it was not possible to say that
schools contribute to the effective preservation of the cerrado of Goiás in view of the
research carried out.
