Abstract

This dissertation concerns critical environmental education and narratives of development in the Cerrado. More specifically, the study in question discusses to what extent the different trends of professions of the Cerrado, represented by the traditional occupation of geraizeiros and the advance of agro-industrial economic activities, influence teachers' understanding of this biome and its condition as an important socio-environmental and cultural territory and place of disputes between the agro-industrial economic forces and the people who live there. To this end, the Cerrado was presented as a Biome-Territory (CHAVEIRO; BARREIRA, 2010) to the teachers of the Escola Classe Ipê and Centro de Ensino Fundamental 403 of Santa Maria, public schools of the Distrito Federal, through the books "Saberes Ambientais do Cerrado" (2016) and "Saberes dos povos do cerrado e biodiversidade" (2020) which are important pedagogical references on the geraizeiros' knowledge. With this, we sought to understand the pedagogical relevance of the presentation of these works to teachers, with a view to the construction of pedagogical practices that encourage conservation, appreciation of the Cerrado and the culture of the geraizeiros, as well as questioning the narratives of "pop" agriculture that publicize supposed benefits with the conversion of the Cerrado into territories of agroindustrial production.
